For its E-PL2, Olympus makes some design and feature enhancements, as well as performance tweaks, to its PEN E-PL1 Micro Four Thirds camera. The result is a noticeably better camera, delivering better photo quality and an improved shooting experience than its predecessor. The most obvious functional differences to this consumer-focused interchangeable-lens camera (ILC) include a larger LCD, multiple variations for some of the Art Filters, support for the new accessory connector, and redesign of the buttons. It also supports an extra stop of sensitivity, up to ISO 6400. While ISO 6400 may be mostly unusable--typical of most The E-PL2 delivers excellent photo quality, with an extremely customizable interface. Performance has improved, but the E-PL2 still couldn't be classified as fast overall. A great interchangeable-lens model if you're looking for better photo quality and/or a more advanced feature set than your current point-and-shoot offers, the Olympus PEN E-PL2 still doesn't satisfy for photographing active kids and pets.

The Olympus E-PL2 goes head-to-head with such competition that includes the Panasonic GF2, the Samsung NX100, and the Sony NEX-5. Available with a kit lens, all of them are roughly priced in the $599 range depending on your choice of glass; the E-PL2 is there, but can be found for $550 on the street. As with all Micro Four Thirds models, double the focal length of the lens for the actual 35mm film camera equivalent. In this case, the 14-42mm zoom lens would be the film camera equal of a 28-85mm zoom lens, or good enough for some up-close shots and bokeh (shallow depth of field) images but enough range for medium distances. Good image for the price.

Pop-up flash.
Penpal Bluetooth add-on.
Cheap lens options.
Fun art filters. Still no dedicated viewfinder built-in.
No changes to the sensor.

Operational quirks aside, the E-PL2 is a great addition to the burgeoning interchangeable lens camera market. Needless to say, if you value tweaking and changing settings frequently, the Olympus E-PL2 isn't the camera for you due to its steep operational learning curve for any mode beyond automatic. Refined look and feel from older E-PL1 camera, Brighter, higher resolution screen (still not class-leading though), Competitively priced, Best in class for continuous shooting performance, Can be difficult to adjust exposures and tweak settings, Menu interfaces are long overdue for a refresh, Operational quirks aside, the E-PL2 is a great addition to the burgeoning interchangeable lens camera market.
