Art design is brilliant. Humorous banter between friend and foe alike. Constant action, diverse environments and stacks of unlockables.

The more advanced moves require quite a bit of co-ordination that might put younger players off. The AI can sometimes be a bit wonky, but it's not a game-breaker. Including harder difficulty levels would have increased replayability tenfold.

The Brave and the Bold is more than the sum of its shortcomings. The ambition was clearly to present a series of madcap adventures packed with witty dialogue, over-the-top flight sequences and brilliantly presented artwork, and those respects, it's a case of mission accomplished.

Камера, как будто, обожает фокусироваться на экшене, хотя в моменты передышки не забывает отъезжать назад и показывать и второстепенных персонажей. Конечно, большинство таких трюков уже было использовано в Shank, но и здесь они выполняют свою роль, погружая нас в мир игры.
Бои довольно просты, у нас есть несколько движений - удары, подкаты, отпрыгивания. А еще есть возможность вызвать другого супергероя на подмогу. Героя выбираешь перед началом уровня. Умершие враги рассыпаются градом монет и чем круче комбо вы сделали, тем сильнее град. На эти деньги вы покупаете оружие и улучшения. Есть уровни, пройти которые можно только с покупным оружием. Если же вас убили - ничего страшного, всего лишь потеря нескольких монет.
В итоге мы получаем Бэтмена, показанного с более человечной стороны, отличную боевку и неплохой юмор. Стоит, по крайней мере, попробовать.

Batman is an always an interesting character, but the most recent takes on the Caped Crusader have been almost oppressively dark. Go back and read the comics that took place before Year One and you'll find a Batman that sometimes smiles, is much more at peace with himself, and gets the job done with a sort of sly humor. That Batman is on full display in this Wii game, an adaptation of the titular cartoon. The game is rendered in a beautiful hand-drawn animation style, with bright colors, interesting camera angles, and above all, a sense of fun. This may be aimed squarely at younger gamers, but adults are going to find much to like. Batman: the Brave and the Bold DeveloperWayForward PublisherWarner Bros. Price$39.99 Shop.Ars PlatformNintendo Wii The game looks like a beautifully detailed Super Nintendo brawler, and I say that in the nicest possible way. The camera seems to love framing the action, and will draw back to allow other characters to exist in the foreground. In an early level I crashed through a window and fought through a building with only my shadow being visible. Yes, many of these tricks were used in Shank, but they still work to make Brave and the Bold a dynamic visual experience. This is a game to soak in. The game's combat is simple, but it offers you some brawling options, with punches, throws, back-flips, and rolls. You're also given the ability to call in another superhero to help clear the screen of thugs. You select your helper-hero at the beginning of each level, and it's never bad to see Hal Jordan or the Green Arrow come in to shake things up. Each "episode" also comes with its own sidekick that fights alongside you, including Robin, Hawkman, the Blue Beetle, and Guy Gardner. You can choose to play as either Batman or the sidekick before each section, and while they all follow the same basic rules of battle, the animations and details are all different, giving the game a fair amount of variety. A second human player can jump in to fight with you at any point, and co-op makes the game shine even brighter. Unfortunately, you're stuck with the Wiimote and Nunchuk control method; there is no support for the Classic Controller. The enemies die and release a shower of coins, some shaped like the Bat signal. The higher your combos, the more coins you'll gain, which you can use to buy new weapons and upgrades. Some levels have sections that can only be accessed by using purchased weapons, giving the game a certain amount of replay value. This is needed, as any skilled player is going to charge through these enemies and bosses without much resistance; the game is aimed squarely at younger players and the difficulty level is set accordingly. Don't let that turn you off, however, as building your combos, mastering the fighting system, and listening to the whip-smart dialog between the characters is more than enough to keep even the most jaded gamers busy. With graphics this lush and attractive, it's nice to simply sit back, rack up the kills, and enjoy the sites and sounds of Gotham City. You don't need to be afraid of failure, as death means a small loss of coins and carries no other penalty, and the levels have a single main path to the exit. You can do some exploring to find extra coins, but you'll earn enough from combat to satisfy most of your gadget lust. A single playthrough is going to show you the vast majority of what the game has to offer, and you'll meet, be helped by, or do battle with an impressive collection of superheroes. In less caring hands this could have been a lazy cash-in, but with many deft touches and solid writing it becomes a fresh way to fight the forces of evil as a (slightly less) Dark Knight. WayForward may deal in licensed properties, but this title continues the studio's run of quality games like A Boy and his Blob on the Wii and Contra 4 on the DS. Even with the lower-than-standard price attached to the game, most Ars Technica readers are going to be served by a weekend rental to enjoy the game's sense of fun and enjoyable combat. Those with kids should consider a purchase, but everyone should at least give this a shot. This is a side of Batman we don't often see these days, and it's a welcome shift in tone.
