Review: Super Stardust Delta

Ignoring all the praise Super Stardust HD received when it was released on PS3 back in 2007 I never tried the game until the trophy patch came out, with the sole purpose of seeing how trophies worked. But what I got was an addictive twin stick shooter that offered big challenges and fun score chases (along with a little frustration, I am looking at you Late Boomer trophy). So I got excited when I heard that a new Super Stardust game was releasing on the PlayStation Vita, and thankfully that excitement was fully justified. Controllable chaos Good controls Challenge Day one DLC that shouldn’t be DLC Easy to accidentally set off specials in Delta mode. Housemarque has once again offered a wonderful chaotic experience with Super Stardust Delta that I will be enjoying for a long time to come.

Although the Stardust series began life as a simple Asteroids clone on the classic Amiga computers, it wasn't until the release of Super Stardust HD on PlayStation 3's download service that it began to garner worldwide recognition. Lauded for its intuitive play controls and vibrant visuals, the twin analogue stick shooter quickly became a big hit with gamers and one of the most downloaded titles on the service. It's not often that we see a console title end up being a better fit on a portable system, but after putting Super Stardust Delta through its paces it's abundantly clear that the experience fits the system like a glove. With its huge number of game modes and quick bursts of intense shooting action, it's the perfect type of game for those times when you only have a few minutes to play. It's an absolute blast to play; those short bursts of gaming could very easily turn into far lengthier affairs if you're not careful.

Fire and ice. Move and shoot. Life and death. Super Stardust Delta is a game about absolutes. It isn't concerned with grey areas or depth, but this score-attack twin-stick shooter uses its simplicity to its advantage. Super Stardust Delta doesn't deliver anything entirely new, but it's a refined variant of one of the best twin-stick shooters around that can now be played on the go. New modes, abilities and mini-games may not add much, but they don't need to. Competing with friends for a high score remains as enticing as ever, while the intuitive, minimalist design and shimmering cosmic chaos render Super Stardust Delta a dazzling intergalactic dust-up.

Super Stardust Delta (PSV) Review

PlayStation Vita is but a day old in the U.S. by way of the First Edition Bundle, and Sony already has downloadable games available, including the exquisite Super Stardust Delta. Created by Housemarque, this twin stick shooter does a fine job showcasing the system's abilities while offering players addictive, arcade style fun, where the primary goal is to shoot, then shoot some more. Near effortless controls, sharp HD graphics with cool special effects, mini games, neat weapon switching mechanic. Needs additional modes. With this in mind, and with a $9.99 price tag, Delta comes highly recommended. Not only is it a great way to show off Vita without breaking the bank, but it also retains the series' intense action while highlighting the portable's second analog. That said, jump on the sticks and save the universe...again.
